![]() | 'Into Darkness' Boldly Goes Where 2009's 'Trek' Went Before (20 May 2013)Star Trek Into Darkness easily opened on top this weekend, though it wasn't the kind of box office sensation that many*including distributor Paramount*were expecting it to be. The J.J. Abrams-directed sequel took in an estimated $70.6 million for the three-day frame; add in its grosses from Wednesday night and all-day Thursday, and the movie has to-date earned $84.1 million. In comparison, 2009's Star Trek grossed $75.2 million for the weekend, and $86.7 million through its first four-and-a-half days. While it's usually unfair to knock a movie for opening in line with its predecessor, it certainly feels like the "disappointment" label is applicable in this case. All signs suggest the 2009 Trek is very well-liked (it has a strong 8.0 rating on IMDb) and Paramount's marketing did a decent job walking the sequel tightrope (a balanced approach of promising more-of-the-same and offering something new). Additionally, there was four years of ticket price inflation and »See full article at Box Office Mojo |

![]() | Carey Mulligan Steals Her Own Style in This Lanvin Suit (20 May 2013)Somewhere in the unofficial guide to being an A-List celebrity promoting a major movie is the rule that states: Never wear the same look twice. Apparently Carey Mulligan didn't have time to read the rulebook. Or buy another outfit. The Great Gatsby leading lady showed up for two separate events in this same off-white Lanvin suit. If the stark color and boxy shape weren't so memorable, she could have gotten away with it too. So, what was she thinking?! Probably that she feels so incredibly comfortable (and looks so incredibly beautiful) in this suit, so the fashion press can shove it. The fact that she wore another, strikingly similar tux recently certainly supports that theory. So in »See full article at E! Online |

Abrams' space epic sequel failed to match the expectations of analysts and distributor Paramount, but in the big picture – the one with bigger-than-ever foreign grosses and four weeks of Imax screenings ahead – it should do fine in the long run.
